Master of Science in Nursing

Minimum Requirements for Admission

  1. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program.
  2. Free and unrestricted R.N. license in an approved state with no imposed restrictions on practice, voluntary or otherwise.
  3. Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 (4.0 scale) cumulative or in last 60 hours.
  4. Three hour graduate or undergraduate course in statistics with a grade of “C” or higher.
  5. MSN-FNP applicants must have at least one year of RN experience by the start of the program.

Consideration is also given to the applicants’ professional work experience, score on either the sub-tests of the Graduate Record Examination general test or the Miller Analogies Test, the applicant’s statement of Personal and Professional Objectives, the three required professional references, and the rural nature of the site identified for matriculation or proposed for future practice.
Note: Admission is competitive and limited to available space. Selection will be based on careful consideration of all application materials. In addition to the above criteria, an interview may be requested.

Application Process

  1. Complete the Graduate School Application
    First time applicants: Select “create an account.”
    Previous applicants: Enter your existing Login ID and PIN where indicated.
  2. Select the degree you want to pursue (master's degree) when prompted.
  3. Choose your program from the list that will be provided.
  4. Select the admissions term you would like to begin the program from the drop down menu. Enter your name where indicated.
  5. Complete each section of the application.
    • Professional Objectives - There is a link within the “Professional Objectives” section of the application that will allow you to upload supporting documents such as your statement of personal and professional objectives.
    • Departmental Information - There are links to professional reference and occupation profile forms within the “Departmental Information” section. These can be completed and mailed to the Graduate School or uploaded via the supporting document link.

Things to Remember

Your statement of personal and professional objectives must do the following:

  • Describe your reasons for pursuing a MSN degree and particular option (FNP, PMHNP, PHN Administration or PHN Education).
  • Describe how your past work experiences have prepared you to pursue a MSN degree in your chosen option.
  • Describe your understanding of the role of the MSN-prepared nurse.
  • Describe the life modifications you have made or will need to make to be successful in a professional graduate online program.

The following documents should be sent directly to the EKU Graduate School:

  • Three completed professional reference forms.
  • Official transcripts of all previous college work (except coursework taken at EKU).
  • Copy of web verification of your RN license.
  • GRE or MAT scores. Note: If you have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, you are exempt from the GRE/MAT requirement.

Post-MSN Certificates

Post-MSN Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree

Note: Admission is competitive. Selection will be based on careful consideration of all application materials. An interview may be requested.

Minimum Requirements for Admission

Applicants for the Post-MSN DNP program must:

  • Be a graduate of a Master’s in Nursing degree program from a nationally accredited program.
  • Hold an unencumbered RN license in Kentucky or compact state.
  • Possess a graduate GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale).

  2. Select the degree you want to pursue (doctorate) when prompted.
  3. Choose your program from the list that will be provided.
  4. Select the admissions term you would like to begin the program from the drop down menu. Enter your name where indicated.
  5. Complete each section of the application.
    • Professional Objectives - There is a link within the “Professional Objectives” section of the application that will allow you to upload supporting documents such as your statement of personal and professional objectives.
    • Departmental Information - There are also links to professional reference and occupation profile forms within the “Departmental Information” section. These can be completed and mailed to the graduate school or uploaded via the supporting document link.

  • Describe your reasons for pursuing the program.
  • Describe how obtaining this degree will change your future practice.
  • Describe what academic strengths and weaknesses you bring to the program and explain how you plan to grow in this area.
  • Describe what life modifications you have made or will need to make to be successful in this program.
  • Describe your understanding of online/independent learning.
  • Describe your capstone research topic, if you are already considering one.
